In October 331 BC, Alexander faced Darius III at Gaugamela, the decisive clash between Macedonia and Persia. On open ground prepared to favor Persian numerical superiority, Alexander prevailed through discipline and brilliant maneuver. He neutralized the war chariots, opened a breach in the enemy center, and launched a direct charge against Darius, forcing him to flee. Even though he abandoned the final pursuit to save his army, Alexander achieved a total victory, sealing the end of the Achaemenid Empire and becoming master of Asia.

Alexander's tactics for Gaugamela:
Alexander moved his army in a slanting phalanx, with the right wing of the Greeks riding parallel to the right, with the opposing Persian left wing under Visos following him. The Greek center moved past the Persian, repelling chariots and archers, while clashing with the Immortals and Greek mercenaries. The Macedonian left wing under Parmenion remained in a defensive position while being attacked by the Persian right wing under Mazaeus. In this way, the Persian center where Darius was was completely demoralized and as soon as Alexander recognized it, he turned 180 degrees towards the Persian center with a select group of cavalry, while the rest of his right wing clashed with Vissus to prevent him from following Alexander. Thus, Alexander's select group reached Darius and the Persian king fled(forgetting that he had 15 elephants in the rear for February, which he could have used against Alexander; in the end, these beasts were not used at all), breaking the morale of the entire army. Although Alexander pursued Darius, he returned to save Parmenion and his camp, which was under attack by Persian and Indian cavalry that passed through the center of the phalanx and attacked there.
