A decision that changed the course of British history forever. This is the story of King George VI and King Edward VIII – two men whose contrasting choices during the 1936 abdication crisis would define their legacies and shape the future of the British monarchy through World War II and beyond.
Edward VIII chose love over duty, abdicating the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson in what became the most controversial royal scandal of the 20th century. His younger brother, the reluctant George VI, stepped forward to shoulder the burden of kingship during Britain’s darkest hour, overcoming personal struggles to become a symbol of courage and resilience during the Second World War.
But the story doesn’t end there. While George VI led his nation through war and earned the admiration of millions, Edward’s actions during and after the abdication raised questions about his loyalty, his judgment, and his true character. Was he simply a man who followed his heart, or was there something darker beneath the surface?
This documentary explores the lives, decisions, and legacies of both brothers – examining how their choices shaped not only their own destinies but the fate of an entire nation.

King Charles and King Edward are same, they both Married with Divorced Woman, Miss Wallis Simpson and Camilla Parker Bowles. What the difference between both Kings?
The contrast between Edward and George is incredible — one chose passion, the other purpose. And history will always remember which choice saved a nation.

Those buggers, the last Zar, can't distinguish them from each other. They all look the same. Maybe, just maybe they are related to each other, like the incestous Rothschild clan? Don't think about it, just don't. Go to work, pay your taxes, go to war when they are calling and keep the eyes down. Don't look 'em in the eyes. Just don't.
It's mentioned, in the video, that a royal prince's future was typically directed towards the British Naval Academy. Respectfully, please offer insight into the British choice of that branch of the military, to the exclusion of the others? As a retired U.S. Navy corpsman, I admit to the same preference. All the best.
Can you do Frederick Chopin next?
Shame that traitor theory still follows Edward around, especially with that sensationalist book written by Andrew Lownie recently. Many serious historians, like Philip Ziegler who wrote the best and most comprehensive Edward VIII biography out there, don’t give much credit to it, as it was never proved and it doesn’t correspond to his character or the patriotism he showed in his private correspondence at all. That visit to Germany was an irresponsible action, motivated by his desperation for appeasement and for Wallis to get a bit of a “royal tour” experience, but not a treasonous project. His former equerry Sir Dudley Forwood, who was there, gave a fairly serious account of that visit and firmly denied treasonous allegation, even claiming that had a plan to put him back on the throne at the expense of his brother been discussed, Edward would have walked away “in a rage”.
He was not perfect, but he was no traitor or evil man. He was sensitive, troubled by a childhood which seems to have had an impact on all his siblings, modern in his approach and especially concerned with the poor and the unemployed, to the point where he was accused of exceeding his constitutional rights when he visited Wales late in his reign and said that “something must be done”. He was also deeply marked by the horrors of WW1 and that encouraged his policy of appeasement and of wanting to avoid a new conflict at all costs, which is very different from nazi sympathies…
For more balanced accounts I’d recommend the documentary Edward on Edward made by his great nephew and namesake Prince Edward (son of Elizabeth II) in the 1990’s and available here on YouTube, as well as the recent book by young historian Jane Marguerite Tippett “Once a King : The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII”. His interview by Kenneth Harris also available on YouTube is also enlightening.
George VI of course was a great man, a wonderful King and absolutely the monarch the country needed during WW2, but Edward is not his evil counterpart. It’s not always plain black and white…
Could have been worse. He could have given £12 million to a woman he’d never met for something he’d never done…
King George VI and his Queen, Elizabeth, contributed greatly to the success of the Allies in winning WWII. They were a symbol of continuity, and helped to keep up the morale of the British people. He worked hard in his position and believed it was his duty to do so. He was a steady and thoughtful person who took on a job he didn't want, and became beloved by his people. Thank goodness his older brother abdicated because he was a real threat to the nation with his Nazi sympathies. He was a rather weak and shallow person who could be easily influenced. I think he was encouraged in his Nazi sympathies because he wanted his wife to get the title and recognition that he thought she deserved as the wife of a former king. If Germany won he may have been installed as a puppet king, and Wallace would become his Queen……. The British Monarchy never gave Wallis the title he thought his wife deserved. She never became 'HRH' and remained as the Duchess of Windsor.
Good thing Edward wasn't king during wwii. I wonder if he had would Hitler potentially win the war
sometimes you just don't feel like being king.
…the kabuki theater of the time….
The British Empire didn’t fall. The Queen gave it away.
If loving someone is treason, what kind of loyalty did the crown demand?
