After the Second World War, the world did not enter an era of peace: it entered a state of suspension. The USA and the USSR, uneasy allies, began to engage in an ideological and global conflict, capitalism versus socialism, without direct confrontation. With the nuclear age, the mere existence of the threat was enough. Thus, deterrence and “mutually assured destruction” were born, creating a fragile balance sustained by fear and decisions made in minutes. The war spread through propaganda, espionage, science, and proxy wars around the globe. In the final decades, the Soviet system wore down, reforms exposed its vulnerabilities, and the bloc fell apart. The USSR collapsed, but its legacy remains: weapons, alliances, and a culture of fear shape the world to this day.
