Eric, you constantly complain about the regime in Baku, but you’re missing the bigger picture. A dictatorship suppresses a nation’s full potential. The alternative to what’s there now would be oil wealth actually invested into the country rather than consumed by corruption—a far stronger economy, a massively superior military, a more vibrant, confident, and prosperous society. The ironic reality is that the very system you criticize is what limits Azerbaijan’s overall strength. A fully realized, uncorrupt version of that country with those resources would pose an exponentially greater challenge to Armenia.

I think the debate is being conducted far too pessimistically. For instance, Erik expresses the opinion here—in relation to Armenian-Turkish relations—that you can have good economic relations without having good political relations. I believe that if you have good economic relations, good political relations will follow sooner or later. The best example of this is the EU. Ultimately, it comes down to the people conducting the trade. The power of the economy shouldn't be underestimated 😊
