Vikings did not just attack the West: many sailed east, becoming the Rus/Varangians and connecting Scandinavia to the Islamic world via two routes — the Volga and the Dnieper — with Baghdad as a commercial hub. They traded furs, amber, honey, and even slaves for Islamic silver (dirhams), which has been found in hoards across Scandinavia. Chroniclers like Ibn Khordadbeh and Ibn Fadlan (922) recorded their customs, including a shocking funeral. Some launched raids into the Caspian Sea (913); others became mercenaries. This mix of steel and silver strengthened Viking elites and helped consolidate Kievan Rus.
