Two intellectuals trying to define and place "Christianity" into its proper little corner in the great spectrum of human history. However, it doesn't require learned phraseology and perspective to understand Christianity and its role in our lives. God made it simple: God sent His Son to earth because humanity was totally engulfed in sin, not one person was sinless after Adam and Eve. Jesus came for one purpose: not to judge us but to save us from our sin. He did so by offering His body as a human sacrifice so that God could absolve us from our sins. Before Christ, it required high priests to offer sacrifices of the blood of unblemished animals to seek forgiveness for mankind. All that is unnecessary now is that we accept that Jesus' blood was shed on the cross so that each of us who believe in Him can be set free from any judgement of sin. That belief comes from the fact that when Jesus died on the cross, he was buried in a conventional grave but after three days he defeated death and was resurrected and ascended Ito Heaven to sit at the right hand of God's throne. Because of that prophetic occurrence, we who believe and accept Jesus as our savior are set free from death and judgement. Further more, we know what time we have left on this earth should be spent helping others to know Him. No one can understand the joy we as Christians possess until they accept Jesus as Savior. I hope this message from one old guy who finally figured this out reaches at least one person who is seeking relief from a life they know down deep is void of anything meaningful. Christ is the answer!l

This commentary resonates very well. I'm reading Gibbon, and his chapters (14,15) on how Christianity converted so much of the pagan Empire so quickly are illuminating. There is no hint in paganism that there is an afterlife (immortal soul), except for the rare demi-god and hero. In fact, the deification of emperors was an expression of the natural appeal of the idea. The promise of an afterlife attracted converts in droves, and the nature of the Empire (at least of the average denizen) changed as a result.
We seem to be regressing to what is essentially paganism. One should shudder at the potential result.

Thanks for sharing the rhyme! I sort of wince at the term religiosity, though. At age 58 in 2016, I learned how Yeshua of Nazareth (and his mother) are the real deal. However, even if I weren't so sick, I'm not hauling myself off to some hall, even once, let alone on a regular basis. I am delighted to have developed a personal relationship with the Nazarenes. It takes two generations to leave entirely. The first walks out the second is no longer tough it so there’s nothing to walk out on. But the first still remembers what was good even when denigrating it.

Without Judeo-Chrisrian religiosity "our country won't survive" is a realistic statement. The USA was founded with these principles. Removing the foundation destroys the house.
We are mistaken to say the country will not survive because it has become pagan, we mistake the country with morality. The country is going no where, the people will still be here, government will still be here, what is changed is the Philosophy, what is gone are the morals that once kept the majority safe from harm. I hope Victor Hanson can stay with us a little longer.
