As President Donald Trump positions “the largest naval and air forces” off Iran’s coast that the U.S. has “seen since the invasion of Iraq in 2003,” he has some pros and cons to weigh about striking the Middle Eastern country.
The U.S. isn’t in a war with Iran right now, so Trump’s positioning of forces could be for “either a preventive war, long-term threat, or a preemptive war,” explains Victor Davis Hanson on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.”
“It’s very controversial, and we don’t know whether he’s going to pull the trigger or not … He’ll have to make the decision pretty quickly because you can’t just take those many naval assets and stick them halfway across the world … The window is probably about another six weeks.”

I think Dr Hanson definitely favors a political leaning I personally do not, but I appreciate his ability to mostly set aside his biases and give an accurate portrayal of the pros and cons of things like this and he does his best to give an honest take that's mostly free of partisan hackery. In 1953, at the behest of the British government and what became British Petroleum, the CIA, under the direction of Allen Dulles (brother of John Foster Dulles, Eisenhower’s Secretary of State), engineered the overthrow of the legitimately elected government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosedeggh and put the Persian royalty back on the throne. The Prime Minister had nationalized Iran’s oil industry. And, they was a fear of communist takeover (the Cold War). Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi signed over 40% of Iran’s oil fields to American companies. He then shifted from his constitutional monarchy to a more autocratic ruler, initiating modernization programs like “White Revolution,” while suppressing opposition. The 1953 intervention is widely recognized as a turning point that established long-term U. S. influence in Iran , setting the stage for the 1979 revolution.
