VARDAVAR 2021, Watch hours of people’s joy at the water festival in the Yerevan, ARMENIA. 4K 60fps



Vardavar is a festival in Armenia where people drench each other with water. Although now a Christian tradition, Vardavar’s history dates back to pagan times. The ancient festival is traditionally associated with the deity Astghik, who was the goddess of water, beauty, love, and fertility. The festivities connected with the religious observance of Astghik were originally named “Vartavar” because Armenians offered her roses as a celebration (“vart” means “rose” in Armenian and “var” means “rise”). This is why the event was celebrated at harvest time․ Vardavar is currently celebrated 98 days (14 weeks) after Easter. During the day of Vardavar itself, it is common to see people pouring buckets of water from balconies onto unsuspecting pedestrians below. It is also a means of refreshment on summer days in July, which is usually hot and dry.
This video was taken on July 11, 2021, in Yerevan. Many Iranians who have come to Armenia to receive the Covid 19 vaccine have participated in the celebration along with the Armenians.

    Today Armenians celebrate Vardavar (Վարդավառ), where people drench each other with water.

    ▪️𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
    Vardavar was originally associated with goddess Astghik. As goddess of water, beauty, love and fertility, Astghik would present roses and spray rosewater intent on spreading love, also to honor Vahagn, god of fire and war. When Armenia became the first country to adopt Christianity as state religion in 301 AD, Vardavar became part of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

    Afterward, with the adoption of Christianity, the water festival was coordinated to the day of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, and the antiquated tradition of pouring water started to represent the purification from sins and healing.

    ▪️𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹:
    Vardavar water festival is praised on the 14th Sunday after Easter, usually it falls in July, on the hottest days of summer. It is celebrated throughout Armenia, in enormous urban areas, in regions, and even in small villages and towns.

    The biggest festivals happen in the capital of the nation, Yerevan. People gather at Swan Lake, situated in the heart of the city, pouring water on each other. Watering machines and firefighting trucks take part in the “watering process”.

    ▪️𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗿:
    On Vardavar day, people of all ages are permitted to splash strangers with water. It is not an unexpected image to see individuals pouring buckets of water from balconies on people strolling beneath.

    The main traditions of Vardavar are very comparative and celebrated in various areas of Armenia. The ceremony devoted to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ is held in churches at the beginning of the day. Likewise, the consecration of water and the blessing of fruits are held on this day.

    There is a custom to release pigeons in certain regions, which represents another feature of the “holiday of water” – the association with the finish of the worldwide flood.
