What if the Valkyries were not just servants of Odin, but guardians of balance — deciding not who dies, but why they die? ⚔️✨ Maybe their real purpose was never about war… but about preserving the story that follows.
As is usually the case, the earlier pre-Christian Anglo-Saxons also believed in the Valkyries – under their own names – said names being "Wælcyrge" (Wal-kyr-ee) or as the "Sigewif" ("Victory Women").
Love Norse mythology but after upon reading up on the pagan Anglo-Saxon equivalents they seem a bit tame. The Germanic god's seem to be that little bit much darker, especially when it comes to the Valkyries. In Norse mythology they are pictured as valiant shield maidens who take the fallen back to Valhalla. However the pagan Anglo-Saxon Valkyries are viewed as dark, and malevolent furies who are far removed from the noble Norse version. Sort of like a Germanic/Norse equivalent of Jekyll and Hyde. More is known about the Norse pantheon of gods than their pagan Anglo-Saxon equivalent which apparently differs in varying degrees.
