A new power emerged in the wild north of Britain after the Roman withdrawal in the Fifth Century AD. It’s name was Dál Riata and it occupied the many islands and archipelagos on both sides of the wild sea between Ireland and Scotland. For a time during the late Sixth and early Seventh Centuries this sea kingdom prospered under the rule of it’s king, Áedán mac Gabráin, who sent his war fleets and trading vessels far and wide throughout the waterways of Northern Britain. Eventually over the centuries the Gaelic inhabitants of Dál Riata merged to a certain extent with the neighbouring Picts to eventually develop into the Kingdom of Scotland…

I'm named after Saint Columba, my last name is McNeill. My family have always had a Donald, Neil and Callum every generation. They spelt mine different (Callem) which I wish they hadnt. My grandfather lived on Barra and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides before he migrated here to New Zealand. I grew up fluent in Māori and English but I wish my grandfather had taught us Gaelic, he was fluent I would always enjoy listening to him have conversations with his siblings, they'd start a sentence in English and end it in Gaelic or vice versa.
I remember not long before my grandfather passed away he did one of those DNA tests which supposdly tells you where you're from, we were quite surprised to learn just how much Nordic and how little Gaelic/Celtic ancestry we have. It actually made my grandad quite sad, we all told him that the test meant nothing and that many others with the same surname (or variations like MacNeil, McNeil, Irish O'Neil etc) all had quite a lot of Nordic ancestry. I suppose with our family having such a long history in the Outer Hebrides we were bound to have Scandinavian ancestry due to the Vikings and their "visits" to Britain 😂
Jeez. Love it when Saes 'do Scotland'.
Learn how to pronounce Islay (isle-la) and Gaelic is Ga-lic, not Gay-lic.
The bit about the Saxons being the main power of the north was funny though.
Glorious Saint Colmcille. ☘️🌀✨️🇮🇪🕊
Dál Riata is where the family name gracie came from 👌
So basically the Scottish Planters who arrived in Ireland were just going home all along!
I have started to write a history fiction novel set in Dál Riata and Alt Clut at the time of Áedán mac Gabráin and Rhydderch of Alt Clut. It's so fascinating, because I discovered that many british legends from the middle ages originated actually during this time and in those lands.
There was no country called Ireland in the 1st century it was called Scotia ie The Land of the Scots and the people were called the Scotti ie Scots the Scotti landed in the 1st century in todays Ireland itvwas the Romans and Greeks called today's Ireland as Scotia. The Scots/Scotti are not irish as Ireland did not exist in the 1st to 5th century 😢😢😢😢😢😢
The first king was Fergus mor not Kenneath Mac Alpine. Fergus Mor held power in argyle Dalriada was a Irish kingdom not the other way round why are people trying to change the narrative
Scoti is a Roman derogatory term….like a n1§§€®
Visited Dunadd last week!
This was really interesting, thanks a lot
I love the imagery your a damn good editor the dalriada story is a good one
Is toil leam na mapaichean.
I like (with me) the maps.
+1 algo
I'd be interested in more info regarding these Gaelic longships. Didn't know they existed.
I understood that the MacDonald and MacDougall clans were FM this area. Is that the case?
Interesting. Very cool stuff! As a Gael from Ulaidh myself, you did butcher a few pronunciations, but I'll get over it! Hahah, great video
Found kenneth McAlpine is likely my paternal grandfather. Wild shit
👍
Dal Riada pronounced Dal Ree-ah-dah Gabráin pronounced Gah-Braw-in

Thank you! I'm somewhat new to actually picturing these histories. My ancestors seem to be involved with all kinds of events, yet I struggle to find much about the "dark men of peace". I can't help but feel some sense of unresolved justice.
The map that is shown might be wrong as Carlisle was part of Scotland at this time as was Cumbria.
Aedan didn't grant Columcille (Coumba) Iona. That would be his predecessor, Conall mac Comgaill who did that.
