Fearless and red-haired, Erik Thorvaldsson—Erik the Red—was banished from Iceland in 982 after avenging the death of his servants. Instead of yielding, he sailed west and discovered a colossal island; to attract settlers, he named it Greenland, “Green Land.” Three years later, he returned and set out with 25 ships; only 14 survived, but they founded the Eastern and Western Settlements, which flourished and traded with Europe. From there, his son Leif Erikson reached America in 1000. Erik died in 1003, leaving a legacy of Viking audacity.
