Robespierre is born frail in Arras and, scarred by his mother’s death and his father’s abandonment, he puts on an armor of discipline. In Paris, he immerses himself in Rousseau and returns as a lawyer for the poor, a champion of science, and an enemy of the death penalty. In 1789, he arrives at the Revolution: mocked, he persists until he becomes “the Incorruptible.” But the king’s flight, war, and chaos push him to the edge. At Louis XVI’s trial, he breaks with his own convictions: “Louis must die so the nation may live.” And there is no going back.
