EXCLUSIVE REPORT: The team at The Armenian Report took a trip to the ancient Armenian village of Yervandashat in the Armavir Province of Armenia. The historic village is located at the corner junction of Araks and Akhuryan rivers. Yervandashat has a ruined basilica dated to the 4th or 5th century and the Saint Shushanik church of the 10th to 17th century. Along the main highway leading to and from the area are khachkar monuments. According to some historians, Yervandashat was one of the 13 historic capitals of Armenia, serving as a capital city between 210 and 176 BC during the Orontid rule over Armenia and the beginning of their successors; the Artaxiad dynasty.
Today the residents of the village are mainly engaged in agriculture and livestock farming.
Although the village is separated from the Turkish border with barbed wires, the villagers do not want to hear about Armenia-Turkey reconciliation.
In a conversation with The Armenian Report, the residents of the village stated that they do not believe that Turkey is ready to normalize relations with Armenia.
“Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, we didn’t know that there would be a war. And the war was unleashed by Azerbaijan and Turkey. Erdogan said once again, their red line is crosses through Azerbaijan. It is the same to link the settlement of relations with the issue of Artsakh, which is impermissible,” the villagers said.
There were also villagers who mentioned that they had always thought that one day they would cross the border without restrictions and enter Western Armenia, which is now in the hands of Turkey. They want to visit the neighborhoods and houses of their grandfathers, swim in the Araks and Akhuryan rivers, but not at the price of ceding Armenian interests.
“Turkey has always found itself in a win-win situation. I advise our leadership to do everything possible so that this time they don’t concede anything from us and stop on our wounds ever again,” said another resident of Yervandashat to The Armenian Report.
