NES – Nintendo Entertainment System – Chronicles of Gaming
Exploring the history of the NES, or Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s time for an in depth look at the foundation of Nintendo, the birth of the Famicom, and what would be known as the NES to the rest of the world. The NES was a pillar in the world of video games, and absolutely deserving of as much attention as I’m giving it.

My son and I enjoyed this video thank you for making it!
50% of Nintendo history: legal battles
Atari causes the video game crash and then just wants to destroy the next thing hahaha
15:50 There were other factors here like very limited quality control, low profits from third party games, no lockout chip, and above the others, the combination of overproduction and then having to buy back what wasn't sold from retailers. Which was a lot in ET's case since it flopped, unlike Pac-Man.
Nice audio using the last ninja as the fong Ya. Well just saying hi
Lol Sid Sheinberg sounds like a real d bag. But he gave us Kirby so that’s cool!
Intellivison and coleco vision don't forget those gaming systems
MOOKIE WILSON…..what did he have to do with Nintendo? Other than set up the 1984 red Sox world series thru the legs error
Howard Phillips was the opposite type of person Nintendo wanted fir a worker but realized they weren't in Japan no more
With all the build up and the talk about needing engineers not painting, when miyomoto was mentioned, years actually came!
15/year not a month for Nintendo power
15 seconds into the video and you’re already wrong…
Atari was definitely stringing Nintendo along…..but no way did iron fisted hard ass yamauchi say to arikwawa its ok if it fails, it fail. No way hed put compassion or understanding in the mindset….i know the fly that was on the wall when they discussed it and it went like this.
You wanna keep doing nothing and continue signing your own check with a stamp….then you bribe, beg, barter, hire thugs, take hostages whatever…..if this doesnt succeed your going to come back to Japan and be head towel boy at the love hotels and i personally will see to it you get the stickiest job in mens bath
1989 was a very big year for Nintendo. The Wizard premiered in theaters, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Captain N made it to TV, Game Boy made its debut in stores. Movies like Ghostbusters II and Back to the Future Part II made references to Nintendo. This shouldn't be too surprising considering that 1989 was also Nintendo's centennial year.
The love hotel thing is a myth fabricated by David Sheff back in 1993. There is no documentation prior to his claim proving Nintendo was ever involved in the love hotel industry. My wife is Japanese and has thoroughly researched Nintendo’s history.
Nintendo power for $15/month??? Back then??? Geez…..
This is a really great video.
Nintendo doesn't mean leave luck to heaven, that's just an interpretation. It literally means "heavenly shrine of duty".
I'll admit I'm not a of Nintendo games (at all) but I definitely respect what they went through to ensure Gaming survived. Hell, it's thriving now because of this. It's just amazing
I wonder if Universal was trying to pull a fast one on a newer company in the entertainment business.
Sickening to hear these people who LEAVE OUT the stuff that matters most.Like he had a pasion for real-estate/EXTORTION pacified as RENTAL property
I still found it amezing why the nes was so successful for the following reasons,
1,the nes was not the first 3th gen console, the sega SG1000 did come along aside with it,
2,there were other competitors with their own 3th gen game consoles like the atari 7800 and the sega mastersystem etc,,,
3,while supermariobros were also responsible for the success of the nes,BUT supermariobros was not the first side scrolling platformer, that belongs to pac land and zelda was not the first rpg adventure game, that belongs to hydlide,
4,also both sega & atari did eventually had their own mascots with their own platform games for their systems such as alex kidd and scrapyard dog etc,,,
5,the nes was not the first console to be called an entertainment system, that may belongs to the atari 5200,
6,the nes was not the first console with a frontloading zif systems, that belongs to the astrocadia game console and there was also the channel f console with a frontloading system albeit non zif system,
7,the nes was not the most advanced system, not all the way because the intelevision had a 16bit cpu while both the atari 2600 and the 5200 did had a 128 colorpallet,
8,many nintendo games were also on other systems like the atari 2600 and 5200,the colecovision and even on the 3th gen atari 7800 among other systems etc,,,
9,the nes was not per se cheaper then it’s competitors, some competitors did sold their console for a slightly lower prince,
10,the nes was not compatible with other games while both the sega mark 3 and the atari 7800 were compatible with their previous generation games,
11,the nes was not the first system with a D pad and the D pad wasn’t even invented by nintendo itself ,that belongs to the tiger electronic’s playmaker handheld,
12,the nes was not the first console to resamble another electronic device such as a vcr deck no,that belongs to the astrocadia wich more resambles a frontloading cassette tape player.
13,while sega and atari had created their own sports games for their 8bit systems such as succor,f1 racing and tennis etc,,, but so did nintendo for their nes as well.
14,the nes is not the first console to use mappers or expansion addons, the atari 2600 used mappers along with extra ram to expand the capabilities of their system and there was also the super charger addon for the atari 2600,while the japanese nes the famicom had a disk system.
15,the nes is not the first system with a lockout system, that belongs to the atari 7800 because that system was sneakingly already released in late 1984 but fully rereleased in 1986.
16,,while mario was all the rage and so nintendo did advertised the nes system alot with mario as the forefront character but so did atari too, with posters or they put screen shots of mario games on the pakage of their game consoles,
17,the nes was not the only console with a lightgun with games such as duck hunt, because atari did it too with their atari 7800 with games such as bug hunt and they had also qwak in the arcades back in 1976 and sega came up with their lightgun among it’s games for their mastersystem as well,so you may wonder if duckhunt was really something original or something inspirated from atari’s qwak? Same goes for nintendo’s excitebike, was that game not also sneakingly inspirated from atari’s stunt cycle from 1976?
18.there were also many game consoles released in japan before, alongside or a few month’s released after the japanese nes such as the atari 2600,the cassettevision 1 & 2 etc,,,
Same thing in the us,so it was not that the famicom or nes was the only choice.
19,the us nes is not the first game system with composite out, that belongs to both the C64 and msx wich did had composite video out as well,
20,the nes is not the first console with digital sound, that belongs to the trs80 color computer wich contained a 6bit audio dac convertor.
21,the nes is not the first with a rectengular controller, that belongs to the vectrex,
22,the addam computer was also called ‘family computer’how could nintendo not have sewed coleco for this? Since nintendo called their japanese cartride based console the family computer as well,
23,nintendo dod signed a deal with hudson soft to allow them to make exclusive mario & donkeykong games for computers such as the pc88 and amstrad pc with games such as mariobros special, mario punch bros, donkeykong 3 special and even supermariobros special,
24,despite people did had enough from playing those old arcade games and thus wanted to go a new direction, old games such as space invaders, galaxian, pacman etc,, did still appear on the nes,
etc,,,
And these are the reasons why i am sooo amezed that the famicom/nes became a huge success,
The nes might come with a robot called ROB the robot to trick retailers that the nes is just a special toy,But that robot eventually became obsolete after other games took over.
Also sega did had already an idea about a robot back in 1982 were you can play games on it but it was cancled,
But putting it in such perspective,it becomes hard to imagine why the nes did became a huge success.
That was good, but man that cliffhanger ending! Would love to watch a follow-up through the 90s.
Best video on NES history I've seen. Thank you good sir 👍 PS – NES was my first game console 🤓
Nintendo's lawyers being the fucking hero's of the story always amuses me to no end. They really came through for Nintendo. Howard had balls of steel and John Kirby helped him with the litigation. And to see Nintendo reward that so highly says enough. One made CEO the other got a friggin' sail boat and an immensely popular game series named after him.
My grandpa owned an NES and as a kid in the early 90s I'd go to his house and he'd be playing Mario. I miss that about him. Of course I grew up on NES, but I'll never forget my old grandpa having his own love for the NES.
Hahaha Sheinberg got absolutely BTFO’d
Zelda was not the first game to include a save battery. Morita Shogi on the Famicom precedes the US release of Zelda and has a save battery. The Famicom version of Zelda did not have a save battery, so only the NES version did.
Gunpay is the real reason for the success . I believe Nintendo killed him, when he left
Is "Leave Luck to Heaven" a roundabout Japanese saying for "take control of your destiny" or something like that?
Or something more passive?
Very very cool video!
He was given a large noses Italians have large dozes
John Kirby got the honor of being the namesake of the most powerful being in all of the Nintendo franchises.
It’s so funny that Atari games tried suing Nintendo for locking out the competition. the irony is that they wanted the nes to be open source which would in turn create influx of shit games on the nes which would then crash the video game market like it did back with Atari. It’s like Atari didn’t learn the lesson the first time or they desperately wanted to see Nintendo to fail
I always laugh at the seal of quality and the 40 point rating scale, as there were so many horrible games for the NES. It was a pure money grab.
This was amazing. I learned so much esp near the end about legal battles etc.
A keek o lar a seegum.
Awesome video, learned more than I knew
You've obviously never played Yo Noid!, if you don't know how eeffing great it is.
Seriously look at tremeils face…..would u want to be associated with that
How have i never seen this video?? Great job!!
The timeline at the beginning of the intro animation is missing the beautiful and nostalgic SEGA Master System!! You kidding us!!!
Donkey Kong´s lawsuit was the ironic beginning of the partnership between Nintendo and Universal!!!
Please bring this series back
With the power, wealth, and the Yakuza connection as well as a future doing business with multiple companies that manufactured and programmed Pacinko and Slot Machines I would think Nintendo has buried a few bodies at times…..of course it my opinion only lol
To think that now we accept the fact that Nintendo doesn't fuck around when it comes to releasing quality games that aren't garbage or broken lol
Very interesting, thanks, be saved, blessed all in Jesu shalom
My friend dad bought a FAMILY COMPUTER GAME SYSTEM with color look just like famicom and controller just same and he had cart that had 100 games in 1!!!!!!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!!¡¡¡¡
