Mariam Samoniantz, a veteran educator at the Armenian Mesrobian School and a long-time activist, passed away on Tuesday. She was 80.
The news of her passing was confirmed by her son, Raffi, in a post on Facebook.
For decades, Samoniantz was a middle school teacher at Armenian Mesrobian School, educating and nurturing generations of Armenians in the Montebello community by instilling in them the importance of being proud Armenians and responsible Americans.
A member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and a daughter of a fedayee who fought in the battles for Armenian Independence, Samoniantz played a critical role in spearheading efforts for the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the pursuit of our national aspirations.
Along with her late husband, former Asbarez English Editor Serge Samoniantz, they empowered generations to stand up for their rights and demand justice for the Armenian Cause. To call them trailblazers would be an understatement. They led by example, humility and conviction, laying the groundwork for contemporary activism in the Armenian-American community.
“To our family she was our greatest source of love, strength, and wisdom. To her community, she was a true legend. A woman, who was deeply respected and admired by so many. As a teacher, she touched the lives of countless students,” said Raffi Samoniantz in the post announcing her passing.
“We are heartbroken by her loss, but forever grateful for the life she lived and the countless lives she touched,” added Raffi Samoniantz.
