James Longstreet, or “Old Pete,” was a pivotal Confederate general during the American Civil War. Known for his tactical prowess in defense and his advocacy for an offensive-defensive strategy, he was a key figure at battles like Gettysburg and Chickamauga. After the war, he controversially became a Republican and advocated for Black civil rights, leading to ostracization by many former Confederates.

Longstreet got screwed By Lee and Bragg.
The Tube is walking deeply into the quagmire of Wrongness these days ::The Kennedy Murder, adulationns re: the worst airplane of WW2, the Pig 47. Now, vilification of a great general…. the Reb screw-up was my namesake, Lee. Pete Longstreet tried , at the great Gettysburg Fiasco, to convince Lee to abandon plans for his hopeless, ill-conceived assault, but he wouldn't do it :::: ""The enemy is they-uh and I will fight him they-uh. And the rest is history. Pete's plan:: march around the Yankee positions at night, get between Washington and the dirty Yankees after finding good defensible positions, and fight a winning battle.
I find civil wars heartbreaking . Brothers fighting brothers , friends fighting friends. So very sad .
Had Lee listened to Longstreet all those young men would not have died at Gettysburg , and Lee is held up as the hero of the south when he really cost them the war in which they were doing well , but I think Lee knew the way of south was over no matter what so he sent his army to their end , and Longstreet should be held up higher
We kmow so very little about people. Currently or in history.
The reasons that Lee ordered the Pickett’s charge on July :
3, 1863 are varied. He may have become over confident after so many victories over a foe superior in men and supplies of every kind. He knew that Vicksburg was about to fall and needed a Conferderate victory to defeat Lincoln in the upcoming election and thus secure a negotiated peace with the North. However, Lee had his Longstreet corps march for over a mile into artillery fire, and infantry fire from three sides. As a result, his ambulances stretched for 17 miles as he retreated from Gettysburg. To leave Lee as the hero of the “Lost Cause”, the South needed a scapegoat, and Longstreet fit the bill. It was Lee’s greatest mistake of the war, not Longstreet’s.
The one thing his was not is a traitor! He saw the ravages of war up close while southerners would not let go of the old ways Longstreet was looking to the future.
A channel full of documentaries about people? Hell yes I'm subbing!
Who is the biggest loser ? The southern whites, the blacks, or the Indians ? 😂😂😂
The comments are hilarious all this love for a loser. Loser loser loser loser loser
lee is to blame
I know he was into slavery and that but so many of his children died, you can't help but feel sorry for the guy
He didn't care about the slaves that lost kids. Karma is a MF.
The " CAUSE " was bull crap ! You don't have the right to enslave and Slavery was mentioned at least 6 times in their Constitution . The cause is " CAUSE SOUTHERN FARMERS CAN'T GROW ANYTHING WITHOUT A BLACK MAN ! When Lee went into Pa. and saw all those farms without slaves , how did that make them feel ? Stupid southern boys fighting for rich landowners with slaves , something they did not possess , in which , kept them shoeless , toothless and Poor ! How does a farmer with no slaves compete with a farmer with 60 slaves ? They don't ! Shove your God damned cause up your god damned Butts !
It seems as if the Southerners are harder on Longstreet than the Northerners.
They cannot even get an American to be the orator of this video.
I love hearing about the several men from that era! So fascinating!
Longstreet was a man much like Robert E. Lee, he was caught between his loyalty to his state and the loyalty to his country. I am from Louisiana, and we feel the connection to the land where we were born and reared. I would hate to be forced to make the decision that many made back then. I love my country and my state in which I live. How could you choose. I am not sure how I could.
James Longstreet was a brilliant general and an amazing example in defeat.
He was a good man trying to help put the country back together in the end.
I wanted to like this documentary, but that narration is awful.
You mean the War of Northern Aggression, and it was not fought because of slavery, it was fought over States Rights and Commerce.
Longstreet usually always tended to delay, procrastinate and hem haw around rather than attack.
Please create subtitles available🫣
Perhaps he should have been more aggressive at Gettysburg.
He was a rebel to the Union and he supported slavery. I think very little of him for those reasons
Another fantastic biography!
Harvey Hill made a vicious career out of blaming Longstreet for the south losing the war.
You are right. They showed it on television as a miniseries . either way it was excellent.
Longstreet was an exceptional man, he had his flaws as we all do, but he deserved better, especially from his former colleagues.
Opinion was one the best General of Civil War, 🤔 how that, one of the Confederate responsibilities 650,000 lives killed killed
I try to avoid "If X, the South would've won!" but holy cow. If James Longstreet and/or Joseph E. Johnson had as much sway as Robert E. Lee did… dear Lord.
traitor
RIP Old Gloomy Pete
I mean, he can be a fine military strategist and a vile human being at the same time. Excellent doc.
Who makes up the stupid sheet interrupting the video
In my opinion, Longstreet was an extraordinary general, as he was a corps commander and Robert Lee's second-in-command. I think he was much better than other generals like R.S. Ewell, A.P. Hill, or B. Bragg. Only J. Jackson and A. S. Johnston were better known as strategists.
I also think R. Lee should have agreed with him on his defensive strategy at Gettysburg, but you can't change history. On a human level, I think Longstreet suffered greatly from the loss of his children.
Finally, thank you very much for creating and sharing this video. /

Excellent point
My daughter's family lives in Edgefield SC,along the road, north of North Augusta is a historical marker,he was my GGgrandfathers corp commander.
Even if Confederate Army had won at Gettysburg, what would they do next? Try to advance on Philadelphia? Washington DC? They didn't have the means to lay a siege and their supply lines would have been overstretched and cut off. If the South could have matched up in equipment, supplies, logistics, etc…, it would have been a different outcome
