EU Leaders Respond to Question on National Identity and Globalism at EPC Summit in Yerevan

European leaders offered varying responses when asked whether strong national identity can coexist with globalism, as they arrived for the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Armenia’s capital.

The question, posed by The Armenian Report during leaders’ arrivals, came as heads of state and government entered the venue for the high-level gathering.

Emmanuel Macron did not respond and continued inside the building without comment.

Micheál Martin briefly addressed the question, pointing to Ireland’s experience within the European Union.

“Absolutely, yes. We have a very good example of that. We shared our sovereignty by joining the EU back in 1973, and that was a very positive experience for us,” Martin said.

A more detailed response came from Andrej Plenković, Prime Minister of Croatia, who emphasized the importance of balancing national identity with international cooperation.

“Absolutely. Identity is essential,” Plenković said. “The world today requires a strong emphasis on national identity and prosperity, but also international cooperation — through organizations, alliances, and partnerships. Modern sovereignty means we are stronger as a nation when we intelligently use international cooperation, whether in economic development, finance, or security, especially during unpredictable global crises such as pandemics, energy shocks, and wars.”

The exchange highlighted differing levels of engagement among European leaders on a topic that remains central across the continent. Questions surrounding national identity, sovereignty, and global cooperation continue to shape political debates in Europe amid ongoing economic challenges, security concerns, and geopolitical tensions.

The European Political Community Summit brings together leaders from across the continent to discuss key political, economic, and security issues. Armenia’s role as host places the country at the center of these discussions as European nations explore ways to strengthen cooperation while maintaining their national identities.
