The balaban is one of Azerbaijan’s traditional woodwind instruments and is considered one of the country’s oldest national musical instruments.
Characteristics of the balaban:
* It is mainly made from apricot wood.
* It is a double-reed wind instrument.
* It produces a soft, mellow, and deep sound.
* It is widely used in mugham, Azerbaijani folk songs, and ashiq music.
It is worth noting that there are similar instruments in other countries:
* In Armenia, it is called the duduk.
* In Türkiye, it is called the mey.
Although these instruments are very similar to one another, the Azerbaijani balaban differs in its construction, playing technique, and musical tradition.
