Two glasses of amber brandy, one Armenian mountain, and one French river valley. Ararat from Yerevan and Hennessy from Cognac have competed for a place on the tables of serious drinkers for more than a century. In this video we trace where both traditions come from: Armenia’s ancient winemaking, the Areni-1 cave, the history of the Yerevan distillery, and the Irish officer who founded the Hennessy house in the French town of Cognac in 1765.
We also explain the legal difference between the two products, why the word “cognac” is protected under EU law, and what that means for Armenian producers. This is not a story about one spirit being better than the other. It is about taste, climate, tradition, and the right to call a product by its name.
