While he was still consolidating his power, Alexander faced the rebellion of the Greek cities. With a brilliant maneuver, he bypassed the Thessalian troops without shedding blood and forced Thebes and Athens to surrender, being recognized as hegemon of the Greeks in the League of Corinth. Sparta refused to follow him. At the oracle of Delphi, he forcibly extracted a prophecy that called him irresistible. Seen by some as chosen by the gods and by others as arrogant, he returned to Pella determined to carry the war all the way to Persia.

A historic moment was when Galatian ambassadors came to Alexander and told him: "We will remain loyal until the Sky falls on our heads."
Against the Southern Greeks, specifically, as the Macedonians were Greeks, and he did not only fight them, he also fought the Barbarians in the North, e.g. the Illyrians.
The Balkan campaign was an important training ground for the expedition to Asia. For up to now Alexander had fought his battles as an officer under the orders of another. But this Balkan campaign was the first time he acted as a king.
