soviet animation is what makes me want to learn animation myself. how can someone look at it and not be completely entranced?
There were urban legends about Soviet cartoons in the USSR:
1. Cartoons (and everything for kids) The standard censorship for films was not applied. And the director was free to create.
2. The USSR had a total ban on drugs. But some cartoon directors were clearly prescribed drugs by a doctor on command from the CPSU.
Treasure island not mentioned 🙁
15:20 The Estonian short animation is called Tyll the Giant, it goes through the life of said giant and how he lived his life on Saaremaa (literal translation Island-land) with his wife Piret, he defended the people of said island from invaders and enemies of the people. He also had a brother/nephew named Leiger who lived on the neighboring island Hiiumaa (Hiiu-land)
17:03 seeing when this specific movie came out, I’m glad that this year was WAAAAAY Different than a certain book named after this year predicted it would be!
Such a wealth of culture and beauty coming from a part of the world that the West had always tried to tell me is "evil".
Great video, very informative and illuminating. Beginning in 1957-58, the "Radio & Television Packaging" company, run by the industrious William Cayton, began to import foreign-made cartoons and films, dud them into English, chop them into "chapters" (usually 28), and sell them to syndicated TV stations that were desperate for content (I'm sure you know all of this…but I was an eye-witness!). We were thrilled by Ivanov-Vano's Humpbacked Horse (rechristened "The Firebird"), Twelve Months ("Wanda and the Wicked Princess"), Flight to the Moon ("Space Explorers", which I was fascinated to discover that the great composer Sergei Prokofiev was approached about writing the score, but declined due to health [he died the same day as Stalin Mar 5, '53), "Frog Princess, Fisherman and the Fish", etc.
We immersed ourselves in these great cartoons daily. In the late 90's, I purchased many in VHS format from Soyuzmultfilm and, as I'm sure you know, many of them were RE-DUBBED with "famous" American TV personalities, with their classic original orchestral scores wiped and replaced by new garbage, et). But the original, unadulterated versions are the ones to own; even if you don't understand a word of Russian, they are dazzling and enchanting to behold.
William Cayton also imported the Czech Karel Zeman "Journey to the Beginning of Time" (first broadcast on Chicago TV in March, '62) and the feature-length Russian epic (astounding!) "Ilya Murometz" (A. Ptushko, director, 1956) released in the US in 1960 as "The Sword and the Dragon" (also available in a Dell comic book version). Wm. Cayton, in addition to his contributions to "high art", was essentially a BOXING promoter, and managed Mike Tyson for a while.
I'm sure you know all of this, but I wanted to share my limited experience with Soyuzmultfilm..especially Stalin's impressive efforts to out-do Walt Disney. LR

Khalif-aist is so breathtaking as well
Why nobody did mention Soviet Mermaid? It's absolutely gorgeous
The treasure island!
Королева Зубная Щётка and Капитошка were my shit as a kid.
I also love the soviet take on Cinderella and Alice In Wonderland.
I dearly hope a similar diversity and flair will have a moment in animation within my lifetime.
Очень рад, что о советской анимации говорят даже в других странах:))))
I am so tired of hearing word "propaganda" constantly at the very beginning of video. I just stoped watching after the minute and a half. You sound like doing class assigment and are aware, that more "propaganda" you will mention, the better grade you get.
Do note that Sammoyyed are not unique or indigenous to Siberia
is anyone here because of steamed hams?
Some of these movies are considered to be something of a feverdream here in greece, actually! Many people saw these movies when they were young(like for example, the snow queen) and some of us (myself included!) Have some on dvd. We often reminice amongst ourselves and try to find someone whos actually watched (and is able to recall) any sort of such media ,in order to see if they maybe remember something that we dont so we can possibly find the movies that we dont remember. Sadly, were often unsuccessful 😔 if you dont have the movie in dvd ,chances are that you wont be able to find it anywhere else
How did i reach this by watching a video about steamed hams
A lot of these cartoons were brought to Yugoslavia. I remember watching some of these.💯🇲🇪🤟🏻
I love watching this stuff
Thank you, in my childhood I watched many of the most famous Soviet animated movies since they were frequently aired on Italian television
I was shocked to hear your voice on Deaf Crocodile’s new Soviet animation set. But honestly I couldn’t think of a better choice for visual essays on the topic. Here’s hoping for more in the upcoming volumes!
A list of the films excerpted would be very helpful. It goes by too fast to write down.
YouTube sticks a commercial break four minutes into this! Then another one at six minutes!
👍🏻👍🏻’s up great upload.
I remember mystery of the third planet!!!! It was so iconic
