After being humiliated by Aphrodite’s betrayal, Hephaestus isolates himself in his forge. Athena, visiting the god to commission weapons for the Trojan War, becomes the target of Poseidon’s intrigue, hinting at a romance. When Hephaestus attempts to possess her by force, Athena rejects him and the god’s semen falls to the earth; Gaia gives birth to Erichthonius, half-man and half-serpent. Athena adopts him and hides him in a basket given to Athenian princesses, who open it, lose their minds, and leap to their deaths. Erichthonius is raised by Athena and becomes the wise king of Athens.

Those princesses were the daughters of Cecrops, who was said to be an earthborn and part serpent or dragon as well, so the princesses wouldn't have been driven mad by the sight of the baby, but by Athena cursing them
