Fresno State honors Native American Heritage Month in November

Native American Heritage Month — marked each year in November — recognizes the contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the United States. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a resolution designating November as “National American Indian Heritage Month.”

Fresno State has several events taking place in November, honoring the Native American members of the campus community:

Nov. 1-30: Native American Heritage Month: A Warm Welcome, presented by the Cross Cultural and Gender Center in the Thomas Building (Room 110). Throughout November, the campus will honor the history, resilience, and continued presence of Native peoples across the United States. Come discover Native American heritage through a low-key, exhibition-style celebration. Contact: Kathy Moua, ccgcamindian@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Nov. 2: Native American Youth Conference, presented by the Native American Initiative, part of Outreach and Special Programs, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Satellite Student Union. The one-day conference targets sixth- through 12th-grade Native American students from all school districts to allow future students to explore pathways toward higher education by participating in workshops covering application admissions information, financial aid and scholarships, student services and resources. Nov. 6: ED Talks, presented by the Cross Cultural and Gender Center, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Thomas Building (Room 110). November’s ED Talks will dive into a student’s internship with the Intertribal Agriculture Council. All are welcome. Contact: Kathy Moua, ccgcamindian@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Nov. 7: Native Beading Workshop, presented by the Cross Cultural and Gender Center, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Thomas Building (Room 110). Expert bead artist Darlene Oliver will lead a hands-on Native Beading Workshop. All are welcome. Contact: Kathy Moua, ccgcamindian@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Nov. 15: American Indian Movie Night, presented by the Cross Cultural and Gender Center, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas Building (Room 110). Food and refreshments will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact: Kathy Moua, ccgcamindian@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Nov. 18, 19, 21 and 22: Fresno State Art and Mural Tour, presented by the Cross Cultural and Gender Center and College Corps Climate Action, at 11 a.m. Nov. 18, 3:30 p.m. Nov. 19, 3:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 11 a.m. Nov. 22, at the Thomas Building (Room 110).
