Would you expect anything less out of Ellison? Other than defend the people he is part of? Keith Ellison is a prominent Muslim American politician who converted to Islam from Catholicism in college, drawn by its message of social justice, and is known as the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress and Minnesota's Attorney General, using his faith to guide his commitment to civil rights and public service. He observes Islamic tenets, takes oaths on the Quran, and speaks openly about how Islam influences his dedication to equity and community. Guess he missed the pedophile part.
I don't think refined crude is a good term for these actions. Trump can be crude, but these are wolves in sheep's clothing. I don't know the correct term for that except maybe guile or cunning. I suppose if you think of refined crude oil, yes these people are very slippery.
