From an idealistic lawyer and opponent of the death penalty, Robespierre rises in the French Revolution as the “Incorruptible,” guided by virtue and the people’s will. Beset by wars, betrayals, and hunger, the Republic hands him power, and virtue merges with Terror. Emergency laws, paranoia, and mass executions devour allies and friends. Isolated, ill, and feared, Robespierre falls in Thermidor, guillotined by the very men he helped save. With his death, the Revolution loses its soul—and clears the way for Napoleon.
