Victor Davis Hanson illustrates the dangers of presidents not heeding the economy’s significance with voters, drawing on one of history’s most notorious examples: former President George H.W. Bush, during today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.”
Bush lost his reelection in 1992 because he and his campaign didn’t take his opponents seriously nor did they think the economy was a worthy platform to run on.
“ The economy is on the uptake. Donald Trump is overseas with a lot of successes. And the same Democrats are saying: It’s affordability, stupid. And they need to get out in front of that issue and not discount it in the way that Republicans did in 1992.”

Back in the day, I thought President H.W. Bush Senior was just tired and unenthusiastic about continuing his Presidency … boy, was I blind. I think Bush was psychologically-depressed by losses in popularity, and now I wonder if the polls were lying via distorted sampling. Bush had always done a good job, hadn't he?
At the end of the day we can just say we don't know who the next president will be. Who can predict what can happen at the last moment. Or what can happen between now and then

During the campaign it came to me that Bush didn't really want to win. He was so lackadaisical.

I watched the news and political shows a lot back then. Shortly after the gulf war ended, I was watching a Sunday show where the round table discussed how hopeless it was for Dems in the next election. They speculated the only thing that might work was to talk about the economy and from that day on, every newscast I saw focused on the economy and presented everything in a negative light. Even when it started to improve, news shows still focused on bad economic spin. I fully believe it was coordinated amongst the 3 networks. Bush ran a bad campaign, but I never trusted the media after that.

It's no longer the economy, it's the debt! I believe we have reached a point where we following south American countries like Columbia, Peru, Argentina. As a military pilot, I saw the destruction of these economies due to the debt in 80's and 90's. I believe our debt is driving everything regardless of the economy.
