In 988, Prince Vladimir of Kyiv decides that Rus’ needs a soul, not just an army. He sends envoys to look into different religions, rejects Islam because it forbids alcohol, and is captivated by the splendor of Constantinople. He adopts Byzantine Christianity, planting the seed of the future “Third Rome.” Centuries later, the Soviets try to destroy this vessel of faith, but after 1991 the Russian Orthodox Church is reborn as an anchor of Russian identity.
