Great if it works to scale which will take time to prove. It's a problem if too much capital is diverted from cheap plentiful energy we know will work like nuclear and hydrcarbons. We also need a lot of capital to improve the distribution systems.

So far nothing beats Carbon, we have it lets burn it. Even the old Nikola Tesla proposed use of Geothermal but in a different way. He also proposed solar heating. But he seatle for hydro from water falls as being the cheapest of all. I in particular like a Solar Chimney because is scalable and it woyld be perfect for desert areas, I do have experince with the prototype built in Spain in 1979 in Manzanares, through work I was given the task to research how to replicate the plant in California, from what I recall the project did not go any where, I learned a lot about the whole system, i managed to keep all the literature for my self, so maybe next time I go to Mars I could Implement that idea there, perfect project to help with terraforming the planets.

This concept began as Hot Dry Rock geothermal energy, invented in the early 1970’s and prototype tested in the 70’s and 80’s at Los Alamos National Laboratory. It was rebranded as EGS later. Hydraulic fracturing and, importantly, directional drilling, are critical developments that injected new life into to this energy source. Existing geothermal energy systems (e.g. Geysers field in California) tap into geologic anomalies of steam or pressurized water, limiting the possibility of widespread adoption. EGS can be deployed “anywhere,” though one would obviously begin where geothermal gradients are high, making depths to reach economic temperatures manageable. The reason directional drilling is important is that hydraulic fractures in this environment are typically vertical, so a horizontal well could be drilled to intercept multiple fractures in a previously drilled and multiply fractured horizontal well.
