You didn’t give the very beginning of the origin. The unicorn actually existed, it just wasn’t what we think it was. The creature known as the Elasmotherium was named the Siberian Unicorn. Stories about it spread during it’s existence and after it went extinct. “A four legged animal with a large horn on the center of its head” was how a unicorn was described. A couple millennia of the telephone game, and a few narwhal horns near horse pastures on the coast, and the unicorn becomes a horse with a horn.
