Small correction, the earliest mermaid legend comes from ancient Assyria
And by mermaids do they mean sirens because when he mentioned melodies sinking ships and half bird and half women i thought of sirens

Mermaids have a dolphin tail not a fish tail. When they swim their tail goes up and down like a dolphin and not sideways like a fish. I got a MSc proving this fact

I know these are myths and stories, but this one gets facts mixed up……
It is so annoying how many people like to claim that Odysseus left his ears unplugged, to hear the sirens, out of his own curiosity. NO! It was important, for the safety of the crew, that one person be able to still hear the sirens. So, not willing force one of his crew to bare the torture to come, Odysseus had himself tied to the ship so he could hear when the sirens were in and out of earshot of the ship/crew. The crew would only know that it was safe to untie Odysseus and remove the wax from their ears when Odysseus stopped struggling to escape the ship.
