Medieval history would be a long easier for blockheads like myself to understand if these families didn’t keep recycling the same names. Henry I’s mother was Queen Matilda, he married Queen Matilda of Scotland. They had a daughter Empress Matilda who spent years battling a fourth Queen Matilda. Have I got that right?

Matilda is my 31st great grandmother, in fact my family's line goes directly down the line of the Plantagenets kings from William the Conquerer to Edward Longshanks, then it branches off at longshanks 6th son Edmund of Woodstock, then to his daughter Joan the Fair of Kent, and to Thomas Holland, and then to his daughter Alianore and her husband Roger de Mortimer 4th earl of march who was Richard II named heir before Henry VI usurpation.and later goes down to The Nevilles, the Stanleys and the Suttons of Dudley. But also interestingly my direct ancestry also include some names that played major roles in both the Plantagenets and England as a whole. The Nevilles line includes my 23rd great grandfather Sir Richard Neville Earl of Warwick, the Kingmaker, another relative is my 1st cousin 23x removed Richard Plantagenet Duke of York, my 21st great grandmother was Elizabeth Woodville, Edward VI was her son Thomas Grey's stepfather, and my 22nd was Sir Thomas Stanley the earl of Derby and his wife Margaret Beaufort the step father of Henry Tudor.

My ancestor, also she was a descendant of House Dunkeld of Scotland/Alba and House Wessex of Anglo-Saxon England via her mother Matilda Of Scotland/Alba, so basically those stories of Kings Henry II and John being villains towards the Saxons in literature was moot since by this time the regime had Saxon blood in it
Her descendents rule as "King of the Outback" over a bunch of kangaroos and wombats this very day.

She may not have lived to see a woman rule as Queen in her own right, but she laid parts of the groundwork for the Queens who have. And for that, she would be happy. It took many years of war to get there, but anything worth truly dying for will probably end that way. Especially in those days.
