Last night I went to the Gutan Festival — Armenia’s annual National Traditional Song and Dance Festival — at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts’ Sculpture Garden (Cascade) in Yerevan. This year’s edition was dedicated to the 60th birthday of Gagik Ginosyan, a celebrated Armenian dance artist. 26 folk ensembles and more than 500 performers took the stage, including the festival’s signature opening ceremony where every group performs together — hundreds of dancers in traditional costume turning the stage into a living Armenian carpet.
