In this episode of the AUA Media Lab’s Focus Series, AUA Board of Trustees member Dr. Paul Boghossian, Silver Professor of Philosophy at New York University (NYU) and director of NYU’s Global Institute for Advanced Study, speaks with Dr. Anthony Appiah, Professor of Philosophy and Law at NYU School of Law.
Both scholars were in Armenia to participate in a conference on national identity hosted by the Center for Ethics in Public Affairs (ETICA) at AUA.
They discuss the role of common language, ancestry, and history in forming national groups, as well as the normative link between national identity and the state as a mechanism for self-governance. The discussion also examines why a certain kind of unity among people may be neither necessary nor sufficient for establishing national identity.
