Ancient Armenia emerged after the collapse of the Kingdom of Urartu around the 6th century BC. Positioned at a vital East-West crossroads, it was constantly contested by empires like Rome and Persia.
Under Tigranes the Great (1st century BC), Armenia briefly became a major regional power. A pivotal moment was in 301 AD, when it became the first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion. The invention of the unique Armenian alphabet (405 AD) solidified its national and cultural identity amidst centuries of foreign domination.
