Now it explains why my grandfather and my brother look Austrian. I always said that and I never knew that Austria was in charge of areas of Italy. I was stationed in LA MADDALENA, Italy. "LA MADD" is a tiny archipelago off the northern tip of SARDEGNA. One of the islands is CAPRERA, where Giuseppe Garibaldi and his family lay to rest.
I have visited Garibaldi's grave many times during the four summers I lived in La Madd. The site is austere compared to the massive size of his contributions to the history of Italy. Too, the island (Caprera) was opened only from the middle of May to the middle of September, which made the number tourist visits meager compared to the famous sites of Rome. I mean…he is the FATHER OF THE UNIFIED ITALY. Yet, his "tomb" is so ordinary. I'm pretty sure most Italians don't even know where he's buried.
What a remarkable individual. I knew about his role in the unification of Italy but not a lot else besides. Can't believe he was involved in all these events in South America and in the Franco-Prussian War too. Great video.
