I think people discard the actual power of one human (emotions, history, personal truth, internal battles) as it relates to "who" they are versus "what" they are in the political realm. As a person I believe the conflict of family value and survival and preservation of one's values and country lie in heart -whereas as person born into a family of leadership has its implications and one can only do as much as they can. His reign was not won by the people but by the death of the emperess after the death of her husband which lead a regime against him.

Understanding the social dynamic of a country who's loyalties are divided and tainted with colonization creates not only an identity crisis, but economic and social crisis. The ability of one man who even at one point lived in exile reconciling such a broken system of people with valid reason for their claims of religion, ending of slavery combined with interests of the western powers (picking a side) that want to colonize the country isn't realistic for the accomplishment and ANY one human but rather if to occur an act of God.

I believe those that acknowledge him as a great leader understood the balance of him making the changes he could however, not appreciating the cost of sustaining that balance is key. While in his latter days the appearance of his reign appeared authoritative and lacked shared control -in the eyes of an old man possibly seeing his end surrounded by either enemy territory or interests or with people you don't know you can trust -maintaining the control yourself may deem the best decision in the absence of a trust heir or someone to pass the torch to. While this is unfortunate and has its appearance of control, as a human in such an environment I understand it. As a human attempting to cohabitate the earth with such a diverse group of other humans, I've learned progress is victory. That if achieved in a lifetime (progress of a whole people) IS the value of that person to those people and not the power of the "people's" beliefs. As one person is born with good intentions, another is born lacking good intentions. The existence of good (when created) creates a continuity of balance key to those who come after. That is all one life can ask for.

The validation of this is his life still being taken at an old age. If his existence was a threat two things are true, he mattered to many for good reasons and for he mattered to people for other reasons which his mere existence was a threat -his problem his entire life. If he died from natural causes one thing could only be true -his enemies arent who he told people they are because there was no proof that the way he reigned in his last days weren't best. Ending his life validated the existence of such enemies thus limited the power he would have had (ever) to bring Ethiopia to a state of independency they hoped he would.

My 2 cents (I have more input involving external factors like WWI, Laziness Rule and the League of Nations BUT this is my basic observational take)
