“Dle Yaman” (Le Le Yaman) performed by Isabel Bayrakdarian, a Lebanon-born Armenian Canadian soprano, and The Minassian Duduk Quartet.
“Dle Yaman” was one the thousands of ancient Armenian folksongs collected and preserved by Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935), a composer, musicologist and the founder of modern Armenian classic music. Komitas’s life was spared through the intervention of a group of influential friends during the Armenian Genocide in 1915, but he lived to see everyone he loved to die in the Genocide. Komitas had never recovered from the emotional shock. He died in a psychiatric mental institute in Paris.

    Il est des mélodies qui traversent le temps, de lèvres en lèvres, portées par les oiseaux d'une flûte, d'un ne ou d'un doudouk venus des ténèbres des âges.
    Dle Yaman est l'un de ces airs intemporels et universels; cette mélodie populaire fait partie des trésors de l'humanité. Le texte est une histoire d'amour. Un homme aima une femme, ou une femme aima un homme. Leur maison était l'une en face de l'autre.
    – Le reste tient du mystère.
    L'aimé a sans doute disparu, l'amoureux chante donc la perte de sa bien-aimée. Ou bien est-ce le contraire, car on ne sait s'il s'agit d'un homme ou d'une femme…
    Et le jour se leva sur la montagne, comme un glas qui sonne, qui résonne dans le ciel.
    « Tout est limpide, tout est fini. »
    Cette histoire si transparente dans sa simplicité, si cristalline, a été recueillie par un révérend, – le père Komitas; un musicien arménien, musicologue et anthropologue, qui est à l'Arménie, ce que Bela Bartók fut à la Hongrie, quelques années plus tard, dans son immense et patient travail de recueil des musiques populaires de son pays. Une traduction littérale de ce chant le dévoile :

    Dle Yaman, notre maison, votre maison, face à face,
    Dle Yaman, cela suffit avec tes clins d'œil,
    Yaman Yaman Bien-aimé.e Dle Yaman, cela suffit avec tes clins d'œil,

    Certes, douloureuse est cette mélodie, elle transmet au cœur une couleur de deuil, une tristesse profonde où se mêlent des images de paysages, des parfums d'une terre, des souvenirs d'un autre temps. Des larmes, celles d'une perte irréparable. Elle glace les sangs quand on l'entend la première fois, puis elle revient, tournoyant dans l'esprit comme une catastrophe, un désastre sans fin, un naufrage corps et biens. Mais elle apporte aussi, un courage lucide, une grande force qui permet ainsi d'avancer, de franchir le pas, – pour continuer. Somme toute, en cela, elle symbolise, le peuple d'Arménie. « Nous sommes nos montagnes », comme l'affirmait le prosateur de la région du Lori, Hrant Matevossian.

    Ce poème des lèvres absentes coule avec la limpidité tragique d'une source. L'équilibre entre le texte et la musique est un vrai miracle, – d'où son universelle présence. Le doudouk perpétue, avec ses volutes colorées sur l'ostinato du bourdon, la gravité de la mélodie dans toute sa haute profondeur. On y respire les soleils envolés sur l'abrupt de la montagne : le Massis, – le dépeuplement de l'être cher, perdu à jamais. – L'aube est là, les chants d'oiseaux refleurissent, la perte, l'irréparable départ, et le deuil s'inaccomplit. Or la blessure demeure ouverte. C'est un chant de lamentation qui selève, — le glacial moment d'une lucidité, le discernement d'une solitude, le cri étouffé dans les larmes, quand la douleur s'exhale. – Rien n'empêchera le soleil de se lever.

    History works with documents. Any narrative that claims to be historical truth but isn't based on evidence is nothing more than subjective claims and fallacies. There isn’t a single person in either Turkey or Armenia who denies the 1915 Events, nor does anyone claim that no one lost their life at that time and in that land. Hundreds of thousands of civilians lost their lives in that region. Hundreds of thousands of Turkish women, children, young people and elderly people were brutally massacred by Armenians. Hundreds of Armenians also lost their lives during the migration due to various diseases and some civilian attacks.

    With human compassion, let us come together and honor the souls of our dead. But this is not a genocide! And those who want to turn this into another Holocaust are either out of their minds or slaves to their political ideologies. Comparing a policy of deporting rebellious Armenians collaborating with the enemy in the eastern region (and let me remind you, Ottoman Empire was in a very difficult situation during World War I) to the systematic extermination of six million Jews by a monster is certainly not an argument that intelligent people would accept.

    Since the Armenian diaspora stayed on the comfortable side of this, they can convince the world of their baseless claims with their media power and Western political sycophants. You can even see Kim Kardashian mourning on April 24th in black (and very high-quality) despite her decadent lifestyle. But have you ever wondered why the poverty of Armenians living in Armenia today doesn’t concern the diaspora at all? It's because supporting their kin won’t benefit their Western lobbies in any way.

    In any case, Turkey has offered to open its archives dozens of times, but the Armenians have refused. British, French, and American documents also support the Turkish account.

    Thanks to Isabel Bayrakdarian as well, a magnificent work. I was very surprised when I learned about his contribution to The Lord of the Rings films.

    Yes. It’s like asking and getting the British government to apologise for the Balfour Agreement to create a nation of Israel. It was a behind the scenes of an establishment of Israel. And what did Israel do.? The bombing of the King David Hotel before the end of WW2. Some regimes thrive on chaos because it keeps everybody at odds.
    What would peace mean to Israel and Palestine? Could there be an eventual benefit of previous harmony and working something called together? You break the same bread everyday for breakfast.
