Literary Connections: ‘They Call You Back’ with author Tim Z. Hernandez

A nationally acclaimed author with Valley roots, Tim Z. Hernandez presents his new book, “They Call You Back,” at a special event. The event features readings and a conversation with celebrated poet and former U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera on the profound role mentorship plays in shaping the literary arts and cultural communities. The event begins with meditation at 5 p.m. on March 5 in the Peace Garden, followed by a reception ahead of the 6 p.m. reading and discussion in the Fresno State Library Ellipse Gallery. 

Born in Dinuba, Hernandez is an award-winning author, poet and performance artist known for works that delve into themes of identity, culture and resilience. His previous works earned him critical acclaim and solidified his position as a leading voice in contemporary Chicano literature.

Born in Fowler, Herrera served as the 21st U.S. Poet Laureate from 2015 to 2017. Herrera’s poetry and advocacy have inspired generations of writers and activists. He is widely recognized for his contributions to American literature and commitment to community building through the arts.

The event is presented by the Chicano Alumni Club in collaboration with the Latina/o Faculty and Staff Association, the Chicano and Latin American studies program, the Fresno State Creative Writing Alumni Chapter and the Latino/a programs and services from the Cross Cultural and Gender Center.
