Mesrop may have reconstructed the Armenian Alphabet. Some ancient Greek and Roman writers allude to the existence of an earlier Armenian script, like Philo of Alexandria who claimed that some books were translated into Armenian, another Greek writer mentions a leopard with a collar inscribed with in Armenian lettering, marking as belonging to the King of Armenia, and a Roman writer listing Armenians as one of the nations with their own alphabet. Several Armenian historians in the past also made reference to an earlier Armenian alphabet, so it's possible that Mesrop may have, rather then creating an Alphabet whole cloth, took the remnants of an old Armenian Alphabet, combined it with Greek to make a new alphabet.

It's pronounced mashdots, not mashdats. The o sound is like when you say the letter o. It's not pronounced like an a.

It's pronounced like maashdots.

Like saying ma, hey ma whats for dinner?

Same for the first name. It's mesrop the o is pronounced like saying the letter o.

Just wanted to point out, as you mentioned, that Maštoc' invented the Armenian alphabet, not the Armenian language, which of course long pre-existed him.
