“Gold and dollars would have saved you definitely,” says IE Business School professor Daniel Lacalle, referring to the widespread power outage in Spain that also crippled communications and access to water recently.
In today’s interview, he tells Daniela Cambone that in a crisis like that, electronic fiat money doesn’t work. “You go to a store and you have to use this gold ring and you get food. That’s for sure.” He also points out that the blackout was caused by politically driven energy policies that overly rely on volatile renewable sources without sufficient backup from stable power sources like nuclear and hydro. “The ideology of energy makes no sense… renewables are left-wing and nuclear is right-wing? That makes no sense.”
Additionally, he argues that the attack on cash reflects the elite’s effort to tighten social control, referring to a promotional video from the ECB that touted the digital euro’s viability even without electricity or internet. The power outage in Spain earlier this year was a warning shot over our bow that the our adversaries can shut down our grid system at will. That will be the preferred way to fight the next world war in the event there is one. Cyber attacks will be the next means of "fighting". Soldier combat is out dated. Drones and Cyber attacks will be the fighting in the next major conflict. Look at the conflict between Russia and Ukraine for example. Soldiers are redundant. Computer techs will be the next "soldiers". Rifles, both automatic and semi automatic, will be like swords and arrows.

I'm surprised if anyone takes money/cash as a backup? Several years ago in Canada a power outage occurred during a severe storm and the 7-eleven refused to take our money. Saying the Interac system was down? I said that's why i have cash! and nope, we are not taking cash until our Interac system is running again! Everyone was really upset and we were in a storm and needed things as well. Cash is useless and so people thinking that's a backup are delusional. This is why there will be utter social chaos in a long term power loss/off grid worst case scenario.
