MANILA, Philippines — Five people reportedly died due to road accidents from December 22 to 30, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

In a report on Monday, the health agency likewise disclosed that it had recorded 547 road traffic-related incidents, which is 38 percent higher compared to the same period in 2023.

Of the five deaths, the DOH said that three people died due to motorcycle accidents.

On the other hand, 76 of the 547 cases involved individuals who were reportedly drunk, 393 did not use safety accessories while driving, and 322 were motorcycle accidents.

For safety purposes, the agency issued the following reminders to motorists:

  • Avoid driving when tired or drunk because it can affect coordination, concentration, and quick response to road situations
  • Exercise wearing helmets for motorcycles and seat belts for cars
  • Follow the speed limit set and road signs to ensure safe travel and avoid accidents
  • Ensure having seven to eight hours of sleep before traveling to stay alert in driving
  • Avoid using phones and other distractions when driving
  • Immediately call 911 or 1555 DOH hotlines in case of emergency
