As the Kansas City Chiefs wound their way to Super Bowl LIX, much of the coverage has focused on their pursuit of NFL history. No team in the Super Bowl era has won three consecutive Super Bowls, and by just advancing to Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles the Chiefs have already made history. Of the eight franchises that won consecutive Super Bowls, only the Chiefs have advanced to a Super Bowl in the third season.

While a win over the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX would secure Kansas City’s spot in NFL history, it would also move them one title closer to joining the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots, the two teams with a matching six Super Bowl titles.

How many teams have won six Super Bowls?

At the moment those two historic franchises are tied atop the list of Super Bowl winners, with New England winning Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, and LIII. As for the Steelers, their six titles came in Super Bowls IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, and XLIII.

How many teams have won five Super Bowls?

Behind the Patriots and the Steelers sit two other historic franchises — and rivals — each with five Super Bowl titles. The San Francisco 49ers brought home wins in Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX. As for the Dallas Cowboys, their Super Bowl titles came in Super Bowls VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX.

How many teams have won four Super Bowls?

That brings us to three teams tied with four Super Bowl titles each. First up are the New York Giants, who won their first Super Bowl in Super Bowl XXI. Then came wins in Super Bowls XXV and XLII, where they denied the Patriots a chance at an unprecedented 19-0 season, and Super Bowl XLVI.

Then we see the Green Bay Packers, who won Super Bowls I and II. After a lengthy absence, the Packers returned to the big game to win Super Bowl XXXI. Their fourth title came when they defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

The third team with four Super Bowl titles? Kansas City. The Chiefs broke through with a win in Super Bowl IV, and then Patrick Mahomes secured his first title in Super Bowl LIV. Wins in Super Bowls LVII and LVIII followed.

And a win Sunday over the Eagles would not only secure the third consecutive Super Bowl for Kansas City but pull them one closer to the Patriots and Steelers on the all-time list of Super Bowl Champions.

As for whether the Chiefs can catch the Steelers and Patriots, at the moment Kansas City shows no signs of slowing down. They have advanced to the Super Bowl in five of seven seasons, with losses to the Patriots in the 2018 AFC Championship Game, and the Bengals in the 2021 AFC Championship Game. As long as this core — led by Patrick Mahomes — is playing the Chiefs have a shot at catching the Steelers and Patriots, regardless of how things unfold in Super Bowl LIX.
