KitchenAid ‘Color of the Year’ Announcement

When you think of stand mixers, you probably think of KitchenAid. The brand is practically synonymous with the tool, gracing the homes of millions of Americans who use theirs for everything from whipping egg whites for Italian meringue frosting to creaming butter and sugar for chocolate chip cookies. Indeed, if your family is anything like mine, your parents probably still use the same model they got as a wedding gift over 30 years ago. 

KitchenAid’s success isn’t surprising since the brand has been churning out mixers for over a century, which are as easy to operate as they are gorgeous to look at. There’s a lot to love — the striking colors, the seasonal additions that drop every so often, and the range of attachments for every cooking project under the sun — but I especially look forward to February when KitchenAid announces its highly anticipated “Color of the Year.” Previous iterations have seen quiet blues, hot pinks, and earthy purples, but this year brings with it a happy and bold shade that’s guaranteed to make any kitchen brighter: butter.

Barring the ability to wrap myself in the childhood blanket my parents threw away after one hole grew large enough to endanger my breathing, a piece of buttered toast is probably the most comforting thing I can think of. Just the thought, and I can smell the bread browning, see the butter as it slowly pools in cracks and crevices, and feel the crunch as the toast shatters between my teeth. Its perfection is in its predictability; I’ve eaten it hundreds of times before and will hopefully eat it hundreds of times more. 

For all of these reasons (and more), KitchenAid’s “Color of the Year” is one I can’t resist. Like with Proust and his petite madeleine, butter yellow is an anchor to another time and “the vast structure of recollection” that follows in its wake. The hue is all the bolder, all the brighter, and all the more beautiful for it.
